The Blues went undefeated and without a goal against on their way to winning the MSC March Madness Tournament. |
The Blues look ready for the NCSL Spring season. A week before the regular season opener, the boys went head to head with solid competition at the Maryland Scoccerplex and went undefeated in four games to win the March Madness Tournament.
The Blues started with a hard fought 1-0 win over Newton Samba on a very chilly Saturday morning. The afternoon game against division rivals MSC Scorpions ended with a scoreless draw.
The rubber match in round-robin play on Sunday morning presented another challenge by a division rival. The McLean Thunder played a formidable match and were defeated only on a penalty kick late in the second half. The win cleared the way for the final against long-time rivals DC Stoddert.
DC Stoddert had played brilliantly in the group stage and pulled out a big win against Division 1 powerhouse Great Falls Crew. But the Blues were ready. Cautiously at first, the boys gained more and more possession and control of the game but the game was scoreless at the half.
A tactical change for the second half sent Carlos to the attack while Chris held down his position in midfield. The move payed off when Carlos was fouled in the area and converted the ensuing penalty kick. Stoddert attempted to mount a counter attack but the defense held for the fourth straight game. When Stoddert opened up their defense Carlos netted the decisive goal with a brilliant strike from the edge of the area.
